Major College Football Playoff implications came out of week 8…..
Below is the rundown of where things stand after the important games from this past weekend.
Penn State 12 @ Ohio State 20
“The more things change the more they stay the same.”
How many times do you hear about a team who has been perpetually beaten?
And then how many times do you hear about how that exact same team is going to FINALLY get over the hump only to subsequently fail?
The answer is A BUNCH, so we should not be surprised Penn State lost in a defensive battle on Saturday.
The Nittany Lions look a bit short on skill talent offensively, and it showed against a strong Ohio State defense.
That’s right, Ohio State is winning with defense NOT offense.
In the Buckeyes two biggest games this year (Notre Dame and Penn State) Ohio State did not score over 25 points and still won both games.
The question will be if Ohio State can sustain that formula against Michigan…..
Tennessee 20 @ Alabama 34
Alabama is a funny team right now.
It seems like every game they try to lose, but eventually put enough good plays together to squeak by and win.
Tennessee was up 20-7 at halftime only for Alabama to score 27 unanswered to win “easily”.
Will this formula be sustainable in the long run?
Almost certainly not – if Alabama was down 20-7 to Georgia the Dawgs are not giving up the lead.
But still, Alabama is hanging in there, winning games, and if they keep up this pace they will have the opportunity to face those mighty Bulldogs for the SEC Title.
For Tennessee this will have to be viewed as a “transition” year of sorts.
The Vols lost a TON of talent from last years team, and Joe Milton is not at a Hendon Hooker level…..
Utah 34 @ USC 32
I guess the Utes really do have USC’s number.
Despite Utah being down Cam Rising, USC having PLENTY of motivation, and the Trojans desperately needing a win – the Utes won!
Perhaps the saddest part of the loss is that Caleb Williams college career will bow out with a whimper.
He has been an exciting prospect at the collegiate level but he will finish his career without a trip to the College Football Playoff.
Props do need to be awarded to the Utes – they are one of the least talked about teams in College Football but they seem to always have good seasons.
Duke 20 @ Florida State 38
The Seminoles continued their undefeated season with a come from behind win over the Blue Devils.
They won in spite of spotting Duke a 20-7 lead, so I guess all in all mission accomplished.
With the win the Noles can keep their eyes firmly on a CFP spot, which is the first time in a decade they can say that – they will just have to win out to get in.
For Duke, they have been a great story, but this one was just a bit too much for the Blue Devils.
Ole Miss 28 @ Auburn 21
I warned about an upset here, and I ended up not being too far off.
With a final score of 28-21, Ole Miss had to grind this one out.
With the win Ole Miss still has a chance of winning the SEC West, which would be a landmark achievement for head coach Lane Kiffin.
Meanwhile, Auburn is still trying to build under Hugh Freeze.
With the amount of money the Tigers fanbase puts into the program, Auburn should be able to get back to the top sooner rather than later.
